The Pass-Along-Learning (PAL) fluid power safety program is designed to encourage safety-meeting participants to become safety ambassadors. If a person sees a newsworthy event on TV, or passes by a motor vehicle accident while driving to or from work, he/she will usually tell people at work, or at home about it. If the incident is serious enough the story will be marketed extensively because of the inertia generated by the growing communication, or pass-along, channels.
Information learned in a typical safety meeting, unless it is extremely graphic in nature, usually doesnt get passed along. The downside of this is that it takes time to inform people about important, and especially pressing, safety issues due to shift work, scheduling, etc.
The Pass-Along-Learning (PAL) fluid power safety program is designed to energize people to become safety sales representatives because it encourages story-telling amongst PALs (colleagues).
How It Works:
A group of people (PALs) attend a scheduled hydraulic safety meeting. During the meeting a particular safety topic is discussed. Each topic explores an actual accident in which a person was either severely injured or killed.
During the CD presentation, the presenter introduces a full-color poster depicting the subject safety topic. The object of the meeting is to discuss why the accident occurred; the extent of physical disability and/or property damage this type of accident can inflict; and, most importantly, steps on how the accident can be prevented.
Each student is given a 5.5 X 8.5 guide, which contains pertinent information about the topic along with illustrations, and a tear-out quiz. Upon completion of the presentation the students complete the quiz and hand it to the presenter. The quiz result will indicate if the participant understands the topic or if he/she needs further training on that topic.
Each presentation is designed to take no more than ten to fifteen minutes to deliver.
At the conclusion of the meeting the safety personnel immediately hang the subject poster on every notice board in the company, which immediately triggers the PAL project.
When a safety meeting participant sees a person studying the poster, who has not yet had a chance to attend the safety meeting, or a new employee, he/she will automatically want to tell the story about the victim featured on the poster and the PAL pass-along-learning effect begins.
We encourage your safety department to immediately begin your PAL safety-training program without delay.
